*Solomon Gessner, Schweitzer Dichter und Maler. Zürich 1730 - Zürich 1788. Abkömmling einer altern Patrizierfamilie aus Zürich, anfangs Buchhändler bei seinem Vater, später (1749) in Berlin. Allerdings kehrte Gessner 1750 nach Zürich zurück (..). Durch die 'Idyllen' (1756, zweiter Teil in 1772 erschienen), ein Werk in rhythmischer Prosa, wurde er sowohl im deutschsprachigen Raum als in anderen europäischen Ländern berühmt. Seinen Ruhm in Frankreich hatte er vor allem der Übersetzung durch und lobenden Rezension von Rousseau zu verdanken. Auf literarischem Gebiet ist Gessner der Strömung 'Empfindsamkeit' zu zuordnen. *Salomon Gessner, Swiss poet and painter. Zurich 1730 ? Zurich 1788. Offspring of an old patrician family from Zurich, working as a bookseller for his father and later for a short while in Berlin (1749). In 1750, however, he returns to Zurich (..). His work the 'Idyllen', written in rhythmic prose, made him famous not only in the German-speaking world but also in other European countries. His fame in France was foremost brought about by a translation of his work by Rousseau, who, additionally, praised it enthusiastically. Gessners work can be classified as belonging to the literary school 'Empfindsamkeit'.
