Elementa arithmeticae et algebrae is attributed to Jan Frans Thysbaert (1736, Waasmunster - 1825, Harelbeke). In 1771, Thysbaert founded the School of Experimental Physics in Louvain. Thysbaert is credited with the modernization and professionalization of the study of physics in Belgium. As a part of this effort he wrote and commissioned new course books, three of which are collected in this convolute. These text underline the importance of mathematics for the experimental approach of physics. The engravings are by C.H. Becker. With these illustrated course books the transformation from natural philosophy to physics at the university of Louvain was complete (Vanpaemel, 'De natuurwetenschappelijke gravures' in: Ex Cathedra. Leuvense collegedictaten van de 16de tot de 18de eeuw).
